How to sign up
It costs nothing, and your number stays on the list unless you ask to remove it or the number is disconnected and given to someone else. Sales calls should stop within about a month.
- Go to donotcall.gov and choose Register Your Phone, or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to add.
- Enter up to three phone numbers and an email address if you sign up online.
- If you used the website, open the email they send and click the link inside to finish.
Calls the list does not stop
- Political campaigns and polls.
- Charities asking for donations.
- Surveys.
- Debt collectors.
- Calls with information only, like an appointment reminder or a flight change.
- Companies you have recently done business with. You can ask any of them to put you on their own do not call list, and they must honor it.
Watch out for fake registry calls
Nobody from the registry will call you, and your registration never expires. If someone calls or emails to say your registration is running out and asks for money or personal details, that is a scam.
Still getting calls?
Most unwanted calls now come from scammers who ignore the law. A robocall trying to sell you something is illegal unless you gave that company written permission. Do not press a number to be removed from the list, since that tells them your phone is answered.
You can report a call at donotcall.gov. Write down the date, time, and the number on your caller ID. Then use your phone's spam filter or silence unknown callers to cut down the rest.
