How to take a screenshot on iPhone

A screenshot is a photo of whatever is on your screen. It is the easiest way to show someone exactly what you are seeing.

iPhones without a Home button

This covers iPhone X and newer, the phones you unlock with your face.

  1. Get the screen looking the way you want to capture it.
  2. Press the side button on the right and the volume up button on the left at the same moment.
  3. Let go of both buttons right away. If you hold them, the phone may offer to turn off instead.
  4. A small picture appears in the bottom left corner. That means it worked.

iPhones with a Home button

On iPhone SE and other models with a round Home button below the screen, press the side button (or the top button on very old models) and the Home button at the same time, then let go quickly.

Where the screenshot goes

Every screenshot is saved in the Photos app. Open Photos and look for the newest picture, or find the album called Screenshots.

Right after you take one, you can tap the small picture in the corner to draw on it, crop it, or tap the share button to send it. If you do nothing, it slides away and saves by itself.

If pressing two buttons is hard

  1. Open Settings, then Accessibility, then Touch.
  2. Tap Back Tap, then Double Tap, and choose Screenshot.
  3. Now two firm taps on the back of the phone take a screenshot.
