Common scams

The Medicare scam

A new card, free equipment, or a refund. All it takes is your Medicare number.

What it looks like

"Medicare Notice: Your benefits are being updated and your card will expire. Call 1-800-XXX-XXXX within 48 hours to keep your coverage."

An example. Real ones change their wording, amounts and names all the time.

How it works

Your Medicare number is valuable to a thief. With it, they can bill Medicare for tests, braces or equipment you never got, or never needed. So the call, text or letter is built to get that number out of you, often by asking you to 'confirm' it.

The offer changes with the season. It may be a new card, free back or knee braces, free test kits, a refund, or help picking a plan during enrollment time. Sometimes a box of equipment you never asked for shows up later, and Medicare gets the bill. Other times your number is used quietly and you only find out from your Medicare statement.

It feels routine, like normal paperwork, and the caller may already know your name and address. That is what makes it work. There is no charge for a Medicare card, and Medicare does not call out of the blue to ask for your number. If you want to check anything, call 1-800-MEDICARE yourself.

Signs it is fake

What to do

  1. Do not give your Medicare number to anyone who contacts you first.
  2. If you are unsure, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) yourself.
  3. Check your Medicare statements for services you never received.
